I think Scotland has some very old castles . Eilean Donan Castle was originally built in 1200 although it was largely destroyed about 1724 and then rebuilt in 1912 . Drum Castle is also about 800 years old . There are pictures of both on http://www. .castlepictures. .com/ |

The oldest castle in the world is in Spain. Located in the southern region of Andalucia in Tarifa and it is known as EL CASTILLO DE GUZMAN EL BUENO, over a thousand years old. |

Do you know of a website where I can get the names of the top ten or five oldest castles in the world? I know some ancient ruins were found in South America, But I need to find out more for a school project. I've been searching on google, but most of the websites are junk.
Thanks,

First i would say what is the definition of a castle ?
A place of residence and fortress. I would also say the residance place for King. Carcasssone castle was really only built into a castle in 1240's by Louis IX
I also believe that it was the crusades which the First Crusade was launched in 1096 CE. that spawned the european castles that we know of today, with conversions of older sites by the romans and turks ect into castles.
myths and legends for those who wish to be entertained, as the myths are, in some cases, even more intriguing than the facts.
King Arthur is the 1st king and known refrence to 1st Castle Camelot about late fifth and early sixth centuries. so the point im making what is the 1st refrence of the name castle. |

Ancient Scots built stone towers along the coast called Moccas these tower fortresses were used as protection against Rome invaders under both Germanicus and Claudius. However not a castle in the true diffination of the term these Moccas were a defensive stone fortress that people under conflict could find protection. A few Moccas are still standing along the coast of Scotland and are estimated to be between 2500 to 3000
years old. I think the are many older Castles in China so that might be a good place to start in your endeavour in finding the Worlds oldest Castle. Good Luck! |
