norman castles were built with timber. there would be a two stages before you could get to the inner castle were the king/soliders would be. first the had to get through the draw bridge to get were the peasants lived. .this is called the mottethe motte had a wall around it made out of sharp wooden spears. but the only weakness about this was they were made out of wood and only one flaming arrow would set fire to it would be gone. later on in about 1150 they started to build the castles out of stone.
