The primary purpose of a castle was military, and although it served as a home to an entire community it retained that purpose for centuries. Eventually, changes in the style of warfare, advances in weaponry, and comprehensive social evolution reduced the significance of the private fortress. No longer did people have to hide from invading Barbarians; no longer could a wall really stop an encroaching army. Fewer castles were built, and what was constructed was radically different than what had been popular and necessary in the past. Hope this helped. By the way, all you people who say you cannot find information, try www. .google. .com and type in "Middle Age Castles" I promise it works, and if you can't find information,
you are not trying very hard. Have fun and good luck. Very Happy

The main reasons for castles were a military stronghold, place to live and an area for the community and farms around it to congregate for special events and the like. The first stone castles built in England happened under the reign of William the Conquerer. He saw that the native wooden forts would be no good if his enemies from across the channel chose to invade. He built a series of Norman castles that span the length and bredth of England. They were important in as much as within the castles stores could be stored and
armies and soldiers could congregate and march from.. Also they were built for the purpose of lookouts with the pmie sites being at the top of ridges were they could fire down upon the enemy. For example of a castles being the refuge of a force can be found in siria were the crusaders built a castles to hold their position in the 13th century. They protect areas and give areas a landmark. They may be built around a port or major transport route.
