Norman Castles were rough stone fortresses that were built with defense in mind. First the were built using the topography to an advantage. At the end of a peninsula where limited access could be used by an enemy. If an enemy must attack from just one direction it would be easier to defend. Use of obstructions and pit falls further detered attacking hordes. As the enemy got to the walls Stones were dropped, Hot Water,oil and pit tar were poured onto the attackers. The best defense of a castle was simply to out last the enemy. With food and shelter in the Castle to hold off a siege and with a good water supply within the Castle the people could simply wait out the attackers for months and even years. The story of the Trojan war claims that this seige lasted 10 years!
