I lived in a town called Baernsdorf which was about
a fifteen minute bike ride to the Moritzburg Castle. I was in Germany
studying with Kent State University. My host mother worked in the gift
shop in the castle. I rode my bike past this castle three times a week
for an entire month. It is a sight that can not be described into words.
The people are wonderful and Baernsdorf is now my second home.
This is not just about the castle but about the town it is in and the
people who live there. Guten Tage meine Mutti! Ich vermisse dich! |

Moritzburg is more of a Schloss (chateau) than a
Burg (castle). The place is completely surrounded by a lake,
which gives it an elegant feel. Moritzburg was originally built in
the 16th century, but was completely remodeled in the 18th century as a
hunting lodge. Inside, it's decorated with paintings and hunting
trophies in a way that does not reflect modern tastes at all. Outside is more interesting, with a very
nice park around the lake. If you're in the area, be sure to visit
the nearby city of Meissen, which has a fortress-castle of its own and
several other interesting things. |
