Thanks to my son, I've found what I think is a good, basic book of castles. He brought it home from the school library. It is called [u]The World of Castles and Forts[/u] by [i]Malcolm Day[/i]. Published by Peter Bedrick Books in 1999, it has two-page illustrations and descriptions of structures starting with the Mycenaean citadel, through Norman motte-and-bailey types to the Maginot Line and domestic air-raid shelters. Forty-five pages including a glossary and index.

Additionally, I pulled from my personal library a book titled [u]Incredible Cross-Sections[/u] by [i]Stephen Biesty[/i]. Although the book doesn't feature castles exclusively, it offers a decent two-page cross-section illustration of life inside one of these giants.
