Medieval
Castle Plans
37" x 37" x 16"
A
classic design in wood. The detail captures the days of Camelot and
Knights of the Roundtable. It includes towers with cathedral windows. Add
optional lights for interior illumination. A catwalk winds around the
perimeter. Crank the drawbridge to lower it over the mote. A grate lowers
and raises in the entrance. Flags, cannon, trees and a rock wall add to
the detail. Make as many men as wanted to carry swords and shields.
|
The castle
woodworking plans will yield a detailed play castle complete with a working
drawbridge and crank a mote, cannons, towers and walkways, a staircase, ladder,
flags and an entrance gate that raises and lowers. Also, dressed out horses and
men complete with lances and shields. The finished castle measures 17" high
x 37" wide and 37: deep. The system can be stored easily on end in a
closet. Optional lighting can be added for additional enhancement. Make two
cannons for the two front towers, more if additional placements are
wanted.
Materials
needed: (not included)
A variety of wood or wood
products can be used in the construction. If
available, we suggest the castle walls be made from 1/4" thick fiberboard,
a product much like hardboard but easier to work with and comes in an attractive
Graham cracker brown color. Also 1/4" hardboard or plywood can be used. Two
4' x 8' sheets will be needed. Trim and accessories can be made in pine or
hardwood. Many parts are 3/4" thick, others 1/2" or 3/8" thick.
Shop craps can be used for many of these small pieces.
115 volts
electric wiring, an a.c. switch and Christmas bulbs and sockets optional.
Dowels or small branches for the trunks of four trees in front of the castle
(optional)
Craft material for top of trees. Use artificial leaves, vines, etc. shaped to
form tree tops. Small chain for drawbridge, about 3 feet. 5/8" link or
smaller.
Small brass brads for trim on the drawbridge
Assorted dowels; 1/8". 3/16" 1/4", 5/16", 3/8",
3/4" & 1"
Assorted nails, crews and wood glue. Screw
Tools:
Table or
radial arm saw; band saw; skill or jig saw.
Lathe for turning cannon barrels (optional)
Router & 1/8" & 1/4" bead bit & 1/4" ogee bit.
Drill press or hand drill, assorted standard bits.
Assorted hand tools, including screwdriver, hammer, 3/4" chisel, assorted
clamps.
Wiring tools and soldering equipment for lighting system (optional)
Sanding and finishing supplies, lacquer, varnish etc. A 1" belt sander is
helpful for rounded parts.

Summer has come and gone. Vacations are out of the way. September
11,2001 has changed our lives forever, but we still go on.
My grandson and I have finished our castle, finally, and a void
has rushed in to fill that wonderful "togetherness" that your castle plans
brought to us. It's not that we aren't together, just that the challenge
of the project is over.
I'm inclosing some photos of the "castle project" for your
amusement. Thank you so much for your Castle plans that brought so many
hours of fun between generations. We found them easily read, and
interpretive. Sometimes the challenge seemed to be one of focus, but time
was on my side, and together, many lessons were learned.
As you might have noticed, we took some liberties in some
construction areas. But overall, our castle is extremely represenetive of
your plan idea. We chose not to electrify it, opting for solid floors
within the towers. Perhaps in the coming days we will install some
"Bowmen" in those towers. After all, the Fort must be
protected!
Once again, many thanks from the both of us.....and we enjoy your
web site very much!
