The castle Burghausen is told to be the biggest castle of Europe. Until the middle of the 19th centery there was a garrison. Who lived there or what it was used for later in the 19th centery und in the 20th centery?

I am flabbergasted! Ids there really a discussion forum for Burghausen Castle?

I loved it, I've seen it twice, and will likely see it once a year from now own as my in-laws live in Burgkirchen and we will go there for the holidays!

Can't answer your question right now, but it may be fun to look for the answer!

Prost!

Windsor Castle is the largest inhabited castle in the world, and the oldest in continuous occupation (over 900 years).

Burghasen is .625 miles long, or 1 kilometer long, making it the longest castle in Europe. I cannot find a record for the longest castle in the world, Burghausen may hold that as well.

The thing I like about Burghausen is the truly mideveil nature of it. Not some Disney Land fairy tale castle, but a real rugged castle! I have visited it twice and was awed both times at it's majesty. Just looking at the grooves worn in the rock from the drawbridge chain, it makes one reel!

It is very nicely situated on top of a hill overlooking the old town and the river. Very defendable, though it does not need defending today.

Many people live in Burghausen as it is divided into apartments and living quarters.

I have pictures if you are interested, but actually there are pictures to be found all over the net. Some of my personal ones can be seen at www. .wyersworld. .com at menu site "travel", Germany 2000.

I didn't take pictures when I was there in 2002, as I was exhausted from the long walk along the river and up the hill to the castle!

Prost!

Hi there,
Just read in our Newspaper about the thread on our castle in Burghausen. If someone is really interessted in the history of it, there is a brief overview on www. .burghausen. .de, than click on the Union Jack, choose History and on the left side the bottom-most link leads to the history of the castle.
Hope that helps a bit.
